SUPPORT SERVICE DIVISION

The Support Division is tasked with the responsibility of overseeing the Criminal Investigations Division, Administrative Staff, Animal Control/Ordinance Enforcement, Training and Develpoment and Fleet Services. This Division is tasked with the responsibility of fiscal management and purchasing, police communications, fleet maintenance, all departmental training, and the personnel process. The Criminal Investigation Division is responsible for the follow-up investigations of all criminal offenses occurring in the city. This division is responsible for overseeing and maintaining departmental computer systems, including the department’s records management system.

Criminal Investigation Division (CID)

The City of Demopolis Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division is tasked with the responsibility of conducting preliminary and follow-up investigations on all crimes within the City limits of Demopolis. Whenever possible, members of the Division also conduct proactive enforcement of State Laws and Local Ordinances. Our mission is to enhance the quality of life in our City by protecting life and property, and by investigating criminal activity at its earliest stage. We will aggressively identify and apprehend criminals and deter the commission of crime by reducing the opportunities for such crimes. We will be responsive to social, geographical and economical changes within our community. We will work diligently with our Local, State and Federal Law Enforcement Agencies to accomplish these goals through strategic planning, timely response to citizens’ needs, safeguarding victim’s rights and crime prevention efforts. We are committed to the highest professional law enforcement standards under the guidance of State Law.

Training & Development

The Demopolis Police Department has a full time training division which was started in February 2009. The goal of this division is to bring the dialectics of today’s law enforcement world into perspective for the individual officer. We want to give the individual officers the personal inventory to serve our community with sound judgment and tactics. This division has been tasked with finding good training for our officers around the country as well as bring quality training here to our facility. We are striving to be the resource to surrounding agencies for quality training.

Canine Unit

The Demopolis Police Department takes great pride in its K-9 Unit the proficiency and ability. Our K-9 Unit answers a high volume of special calls for service annually. These K-9 calls range from conducting public demonstrations at schools and local businesses, to tracking dangerous armed suspects that had robbed and assaulted members of our community and neighboring communities. Many times our team has been called upon to assist other neighboring Local, State and Federal Law Enforcement Agencies through mutual aid. Because of the geographic location of the City of Demopolis in Marengo County which is boarded by eight other counties we are able to response to every call for service.

Honor Guard

The Demopolis Police & Fire Department’s Honor Guard was created in 2010 to represent the department’s presence at ceremonies, including Police Officers, Fire Fighters and City Officials funerals in the city.  Officers selected for the Honor Guard detail wear distinctive uniforms and display a model of professionalism representative of the Demopolis Police & Fire Departments. Demopolis Police & Fire Department’s Honor Guard has performed at numerous funerals and other events in the state.

Patrol Division

The Patrol Division is considered as the “Backbone” of organization and is the largest division in the Demopolis Police Department. The purpose of the division is to provide a high standard of public safety and assistance twenty-four hours a day for the protection of the city. Patrol officers provide a wide variety of law enforcement services including responding to calls for service, writing reports, traffic control, accident investigation, conducting preliminary investigations into crimes, and providing security to the city.

Patrol officers take on several different responsibilities during events including crowd control assisting with lost children/parents, businesses walk-thru, resident home vacation checks, providing security for city court when court is in session, sporting events, off-duty security, drug-crime prevention presentations and any number of other activities. These responsibilities are achieved in a variety of methods including foot patrol, bike patrol, and a fleet of marked and unmarked patrol units.

School Patrol Officer Program

The Demopolis Police Department established the first School Patrol Officer Program in February 2009. The Department felt the need to provide a safer learning and working environment for the students and teachers in the Demopolis School System. In order to provide this service, a Demopolis Police Officer has been assigned to each of the Demopolis City Schools fulltime. The School Patrol Officer Program has been very successful in the four schools in Demopolis.  Our School Patrol Officer are required to attend and complete a 40 hour block of School Patrol Officer’s Training before he or she is assigned to a school. This training helps the School Patrol Officers deal with problems such as school violence, gangs, drugs, weapons, and child abuse among other things.

DPD School Patrol Officers provides a positive role modeling opportunity, while developing good rapport with the students, staff, and parents. DPD School Patrol Officers also serve as a visible and active law enforcement figure representing the department in the City School System.

DPD School Patrol Officers must be thoroughly familiar with the juvenile law as it applies to the juvenile justice system. Our SPO’s  investigates any and all crimes which involves students, teachers, or any school employee. These School Patrol Officers act as a liaison between the Demopolis Police Department, the Demopolis City School Board of Education, and school administrators in all matters relating to any police activity on campus.

Special Response Team (SRT)

A new tradition of excellence has begin in the Demopolis Police Department. The department now has an active Special Response Team (SRT). The SRT members are FBI SWAT certified . The SRT is a specialized unit that assist our department as well as other agencies in risk operations.
